I was doing some thinking, and I realized that of all of the different types of apocalypses often portrayed in media, it seems like a pandemic is the only one you could realistically survive. I am going to break down each type and why I think this is true.
Zombies
So this is probably this first thing everyone thought of when you read the word apocalypse. And this is an interesting case. As zombies are portrayed, they are not very smart and do not have great fine motor skills. Because of this I do think that if a zombie apocalypse started here in the US lets say, it could very easily be contained to the continent as zombies could not fly a plain or drive a boat to get anywhere else. However unless you escape, I doubt someone could survive long in the landscape as you would constantly be fending off the millions of zombies that are constantly trying to kill you. Bullets and food supplies only last so long. You cannot settle to farm as the land is too hard to defend indefinitely, and eventually food supplies would run out. I also think that a zombie apocalypse is completely impossible so you do not even need to worry. :)
Nuclear Fallout
Nuclear bombs happen really fast. Fast to the point I have a hard time believing that anyone could get into their shelter and be fully prepared to take cover. And even if you managed to get into a shelter of some kind fully stocked with food, the fallout from the blast would incinerate, scorch, or radiate everything within hundreds of miles. Assuming you can stay down in your somehow unaffected shelter for long enough you could go outside without dying, the land and water supplies would be so affected that farming would be nearly impossible. And again, everything happens really quickly, for a fun little demonstration check out Queer Love At The End Of The World.
At this point I realized that there are not really any other common plots for apocalypse movies. Yes there are other movie-specific ideas like cloud seeding gone wrong and everyone lives on a train from Snow Piercer, but overall pretty much all the movies and video games made are zombies or nuclear fallout or disease. I hoped for better from you Hollywood, you have let me down.
Anyway I hoped this was interesting, have a nice day.

What about the A.I. uprising? Or an EMP? Where would you rank those?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Zombie apocalypse would probably be the best to survive, because if you get caught, who cares you'd just become a zombie and probably get killed, and would a zombie feel pain?
